Joseph Robinet Biden Jr—It’s not a protest.”

an empty school bus drives by
—what did we learn
today? we hear trucks
in the distance

voices—otherwise
silence beyond that—
birdsong inside the house

commentators churn noise—outside
stillness like life—like we’re all waiting
to know how the abortion went
are we the living?

the doorknob is hot
—wall-written we all ask
which side of the room we should stand
—these thugs continue in

shelter—a corona pulling us apart
are we taken? evacuated
safe

together?
Joseph holds his stick: outside an assaulted
citadel doing the people’s business
—this borders

on addiction i mean
sedition—at the worst,
he incites the threatened

insurgents—everyone
watching the dark moment
—what will we burn?
flame:: chaos:

ritual majesty: a fragile democracy: devoted
self-interest: common good
—who is watching?

keep your eyes on the noble
hopeful
last: the only decent plan
—Joseph rallies
his people

—will you be kept waiting to step up?
what is this word:
enough—?
